Page 1 of 4 Rangitāne people
Tini whetu ki te rangi, ko Rangitāne ki te whenua – As numerous as the stars in the sky, so are the people of Rangitāne here on earth...
The whakatauki (proverb) here refers to the many Rangitāne that inhabit this part of the world. Rangitāne descend from the Kurahaupō waka and from the ancestor Tanenuiarangi or Rangitāne. The Kurahaupō iwi settled many parts of Aotearoa including much of the lower North Island. Our people have been here now for thirty generations and although many are still resident here in the Wairarapa, a lot have migrated all over New Zealand and the rest of the world. The following sections list and describe our Kaumātua, executive board, board representatives and runanga staff.
Kaumātua
No iwi could function well without the support and guidance of their esteemed elders (kaumātua). Rangitāne o Wairarapa is no exception. Here we acknowledge the contribution and support of our koroua and kuia.
